3 Ways to Balance Needs and Wants

In life, there is one bin for needs and one for wants.  Needs are those things that aid in our daily existence: food, water, shelter, human companionship; however, wants are the eye-catching, pretty and more often than not, super insanely priced things.  The problem arises when people throw all of their needs and wants into one big basket.  Instead of separating one from the other, they become a confusing mess.  This can lead to uncertainty and unhappiness in life.  Now, we all want to be happy, right?  So, take to heart these next few point, and see if you can incorporate them into your everyday life!

1. Figure Out Your Needs and Wants

Now, this may be a hard thing to do, but bear with me.  This may sound strange, but picture yourself on a deserted island.  What things would you need?  To survive, you would probably be concerned about finding clean drinking water, food, shelter, and escaping any predatory animals. You probably would not be dreaming about the beautiful homecoming dress you saw online or the new iPhone.  Even though this is a dramatic example, it is one step in the right direction to figuring out needs and wants.

2. Determining Your Realistic Needs

Let’s jump back into modern society.  Think of things in your life that you care about the most. Hopefully these are family and friends instead of sports cars, flat screen televisions, and large houses.  Then, ask yourself what you really want out of life.  What is your purpose here on Earth?  By digging deep and figuring out these things, you can understand what truly makes you happy in life.  This knowledge will help you live your life in a way that you want to be remembered.  Therefore, it is an important step in balancing your needs and desires.

3. Proportion Needs and Wants

Even though your pocket book would like it better, it is unrealistic to live without desires. Desires have the capability to inspire us and push us to new heights; however, problems occur when people’s desires become their needs.  Instead of building relationships with others, desires separate us.  Therefore, that is why it is important to realize that wants do not sustain us.  So, you should give first priority to things that ensure your existence and happiness.  After that, see the other things as the icing on the cake. Essentially, when balancing needs and wants, look for the compromise; i.e. instead of buying the gorgeous, expensive homecoming dress, buy the pretty, cheaper one.  In the long run, you will be happier and less stressed.

So, as you strive for self-improvement, take time to reflect on your life and make sure that you are not making desires into needs.  Leading a balanced life takes time and effort.  Do not give up!  Invest a small amount of time out of your day to think about the important aspects of your life.  By doing this, it will ensure that you are heading down the road that will lead to your ultimate purpose.  Good luck!
